Highland Fling 2026 – from the Joint Masters

A Word from the Joint Masters

Several, in fact

Fellow Hashers, as the Fling nears, here is some information on how the weekend will go.

Venue

This year’s Fling is at Maydena, an 80min drive (85km) west of Hobart. Maydena is pinched between Mount Field National Park and Southwest National Park, and provides easy access to Russell Falls, one of Tasmania’s most beautiful waterfalls, as well as remote Lake Pedder.

Accommodation is at the Giant’s Table and Cottages, with Fling goers spread across the seven cottages, all with separate bedrooms.

IMPORTANT: Take your shoes off before entering the cottages. Please bring slippers or other ‘inside’ footwear to wear in the cottages.

There is a restaurant onsite – Maydena Eats – which will be open from 5 pm for drinks and dinner on Friday night, and is the venue for the Fling dinner. The restaurant is located at the top of the turning circle, in the same area as the cottages.

Registration

Commences from 3 pm Friday 5th June.
Location: Cottage 3.

You will be given an information pack which contains the program, badges and room keys. If you turn up early, you’ll need to find a nice cafe somewhere to wait until the JMs sort their stuff out.

Bar

The restaurant bar opens at 5 pm and will close at 10 pm on both nights. If you want to kick on, bring your own extras and find out which is the ‘party cottage’.

Meals

Dinner Friday is at your cost. The restaurant offers ‘pub classics’ – think parmis, burgers and steak – or BYO and eat in the cottages, all of which have kitchenettes.

Bring your own breakfast for Saturday. Sunday’s breakfast is included in your Fling fee; chef Arsecutter will be on deck at Cottage 3 for your breakfast (8am to 10am).

Dinner on Saturday is a set meal, gather at the restaurant at 6 pm. Dinner is included in your Fling fee (vegetarian option available).

What’s covered

Your Fling fee pays for lunch and dinner Saturday, breakfast on Sunday and post-trail drinks for the three trails.

You pay for…

Dinner and drinks on Friday night, breakfast on Saturday morning and drinks at dinner on Saturday. Accommodation cost (per person) should already have been paid to the club.

Trails

The trail at this year’s Highland Fling will be memorable, for all the right reasons.  It is a scenic trail that has a historical aspect.  The trail can be done in runners but will be wet underfoot, so expect wet feet if you wear runners.  I would suggest walking boots or similar if you want to keep your feet dry.

The trail is set in a valley with a mountain range on each side, so yes, there will be some uphill for the runners and walkers.  NDIS can expect a gentle incline.

For the walkers there is a short steep uphill section followed by a steady climb for a short distance,  Runners, uphill for a bit more.  For both walkers and runners there is a short steep downhill section which is a little slippery after rain.  Walkers, if you are a bit unsteady on your feet, walking poles may assist on the downhill section.

There is some shiggy but not a lot.  Wear gaiters if they make you feel comfortable, but in the Hare’s opinion they are not required.

Weather

The forecast for Saturday is for a shower or two, reaching a balmy maximum of 11°. Layer up if you feel the chill. Expect wet feet. Wear waterproof footwear if you have it and bring spare, warm clothing for the circle on Saturday.
