Griz has a reputation for setting great Hash runs, and this one was no exception.

Before setting off from the Paddy Wagon Hotel in Glenorchy, we were told that the run would be 7km and the walk 5km. Given recent trails catering only to walkers, this was a promising start. I clearly chose the wrong night to use the ‘medically unfit to run’ excuse.

The walkers trail went north up Terry Street and across the inter-city cycle trail. From there, the pack headed up towards the Brooker with Wee Bev setting the pace for the rest of us.

From the highway, the trail followed Elwick Road before turning left into Knoll Street, past the Showground and towards Main Road. I suspect that most of the pack didn’t even make it this far judging from the varying levels of Hashing evidenced on Strava.

According to Pole Dancer, the run ended up being about 7.2km and the walk (for those who didn’t hash the guts out of it) was 5.2km. There were a few complaints to Griz about having to walk/run an extra 200 metres, but nothing serious.

Anyway, on to something of far more interest. Glenorchy is often maligned because it occupies a particular place in Tasmania’s social geography. The reputation is real, but it is also often exaggerated and based on stereotypes. Did you know that there are in fact several genuine similarities between Glenorchy Tasmania, Glenorchy New Zealand, and the original Glen Orchy in Scotland?

1. All are closely associated with water
2. All are framed by prominent landscapes
3. Their names have a direct historical connection
4. They developed through British colonial migration
5. All are gateways rather than isolated destinations

What are the differences you may ask? The Scottish Glen Orchy attracts hikers. The New Zealand Glenorchy attracts trampers and tourists. The Tasmanian Glenorchy attracts everyone who needs to go to Northgate, the football, or collect a parcel from the Road Runners depot.

• Grizzly: Hare (or was it really Lone Arranger?)
• Lone Arranger: pub pick-up. Ol’ mate Bob recognised her and was chatting away about what he’d been up to of late (he’s 72, lives at Brighton now, was retired but went back to driving a truck) even though LA is pretty sure that she’d never met him before.
• Milestones:
  • Tarzan’s Grope 100 Runs!
  • Pole Dancer 1100 Runs!
• Virgin runners ‘Harry’ and ‘Helen’ – meals orders meant for Hooray and Metro.
• Official naming of Ellen, aka ‘Mrs Wrectum’ aka ‘Beaver’ aka ‘Dutch Mole’, who had never been officially named by a club. Is an Injury Management Coordinator, which sounds like someone who works for the Yakuza. Renamed Yakuzi but using the Spanish ‘J’ to make it Jacuzzi.

• Can’t remembers: Jacuzzi, Wrectum, Brazilian & Clearfell.
• Wee Bev: decided that the scallops were too expensive at $30 so opted for ‘fish of the day’, but fish of the day was actually dearer at $32 AND it was salmon, which will get her black-listed by Chris Miss and the anti-salmon league. Claimed ‘that’s what you get when you order without your glasses’.
• Grizzly: Sydney Swans supporter for suspicious white substance on his nose and inappropriate touching.

Skols from the floor:

• Snack Bar -> Hooray: Snack Bar complained to Hooray that his normal parking spot was taken up by construction buildings and materials. Hooray said that they were building a remand centre for kids from Northgate.
• Grizzly -> Hooray: the Hare gave plasterboard pieces to Pole Dancer and Hooray to mark through any FTs. Poley returned with a nub of chalk and bleeding fingertips, while Hooray’s piece came back even bigger than when he left.
• Herr Flick -> Herr Flick: was asked by Hands On if he had any ‘dirt’. Replied ‘no; stupid things are my persona’.

Announcements:

• Full Moon AGPU now 18th October @ Tasmania Bushland Garden, Buckland. Seeking expressions of interest into getting a bus to Buckland.
• Posh Hash 4th September, starting from Voodoo Bar, North Hobart.
